The period of Navratri is extremely auspicious and perhaps the most important festival for the spiritual aspirant. The nine day festival of Navratri dedicated to the Divine Mother is a celebration of a whole year of fighting the inner demons. Dussera, the following tenth day, is the spiritual aspirant’s New Year’s Day. Dussera is the day to celebrate any victories you have made throughout the year conquering inner demons.
When the demon Mahishasura was threatening to bring darkness upon the universe, Maha Lakshmi manifested as Durga to vanquish this demon. This is why Durga is called "Mahishasura Mardhini," the one who conquered the demon Mahishasura. Maha Lakshmi out of her compassion, wanted to remain in her peaceful, gentle form, so she manifested powerful Mother Durga from her third eye.
This is why the very first three days of Navratri are dedicated to Durga, the one who destroys the most powerful and dangerous inner demons. Those inner demons are encased in the three lower chakras. By chanting the mantra of Durga for the first three nights, we purify the three lower chakras in our spiritual system.
After Durga Mata has purified the foundational chakras, we focus on the heart chakra during the next three days of Navratri when we invoke Maha Lakshmi through the Lakshmi mantra. Maha Lakshmi is the Goddess of love, and she reigns over the heart chakra. Now, the energy is more refined.
Finally, during the final period of Navratri, we invoke Maha Saraswati through the Saraswati mantra. Maha Saraswati is the Goddess of pure intelligence and wisdom, and she resides over the throat, third eye, and crown chakra. The mantra of Maha Saraswati purifies the highest three chakras.
Dussera is a science, not just for dancing the Garba. These nine days invoking the three main aspects of the Mother purify the entire spiritual system. This is the glory of Navratri. After Navratri, we celebrate grandly and end with the festival of Dussera, the day of victory, on the tenth day. If the aspirant has worked properly over the nine days of Navratri, he or she gains control over the chakras. The aspirant gains victory over the senses and inner demons.
The Vedic seers were great scientists in the inner science. The seven sages or Sapta Rishis are the foundation of humanity; they imparted the ancient inner science to humanity which is the foundation of all the festivals we celebrate. The Vedic mantras (prayers) are scientific formulas which directly purify, heal, and energize the chakras in a specific way. Please, chant with all of your energy[Concentration]: Then, maximum purification can happen. We are only light and sound; the sounds of the mantra enter deep within and have the power to enlighten.
This is the beauty: Maha Lakshmi resides in the heart chakra, and when she sees that the aspirant is straying, she sends out Durga to purify the lower chakras. But when Maha Lakshmi is satisfied with the aspirant’s heart and compassion, she decides, "Now that love is mastered, we shall move on to wisdom," and Maha Saraswati is awakened. In this way, only by growing in love is enlightenment possible. At the end, the Mother assumes her full form in all of her splendour; the aspirant has become enlightened. From that point, the Goddess just grants continuous bliss, peace, and happiness; her work is done. She Makes us happy for ever.
